Grup band ini berjaya selama hampir dua dekade. Pada 1970-an, formasi band mengalami perubahan dengan keluarnya Iskandar dan Rizal Arsad. Mereka lalu digantikan oleh Reynold Panggabean dan Charles Hutagalung. Kemahiran Charles dalam menulis lagu-lagu sentimentil membawa nama grup band ini melambung. The Mercy’s menjadi salah satu band Indonesia yang terkenal dan masuk dalam “The Big Five“. Tak hanya Charles, Rinto Harahap pun turut berkontribusi menuliskan lagu untuk The Mercy’s. Lagu ciptaan Rinto antara lain “Ayah”, “Love”, “Bunga Mawar” dan “Injit-Injit Semut”. Sedangkan lagu andalan karya Charles Hutagalung antara lain “Kisah Seorang Pramuria”, “Usah Kau Harap Lagi” dan “Semua Bisa Bilang”. The Mercy’s selama karirnya telah meraih banyak penghargaan musik. Tak tanggung-tanggung, The Mercy’s berhasil menyabet enam Golden Record, dan penghargaan lainnya dari Puspen ABRI.
